The summer sun beat down on the concrete surrounding the Oakwood Community Pool, making the water look like a shimmering oasis. For twelve-year-old Leo and his best friend, Sam, this was the only place to be.

"Last one in is a rotten egg!" Leo shouted, dropping his towel on a lounge chair and sprinting toward the edge.

Sam was right on his heels, his feet slapping against the hot pavement. They hit the water in twin cannonballs, sending a massive splash that arched over the side and nearly drenched a sunbathing teenager. When they surfaced, gasping and grinning, the cool water was an instant relief from the August heat.

"Alright," Sam said, wiping water from his eyes. "Today’s the day."

Leo looked at him skeptically. "The day for what?"

"The day you finally jump off the high dive," Sam said, pointing toward the three-meter board at the far end of the pool. It loomed over the shallow end, a local rite of passage for the kids in the neighborhood.

Leo felt his stomach do a flip. He had been content with the diving board on the lower end, but the high dive was a different beast. It looked incredibly high from down here. "I don't know, Sam. That’s pretty far up."

"Come on, the line is short right now," Sam urged, already swimming toward the ladder. "I’ll go first. If I survive, you have to go."

Leo watched his friend climb the metal rungs. Sam wasn't afraid of anything. He walked to the edge of the board, bounced once, and launched himself into the air with a perfect swan dive. He sliced into the water with barely a splash.

Sam resurfaced, pushing his goggles up. "See? Easy! Get up here!"

With a groan of mock defeat, Leo climbed out and made the long trek up the ladder. Each rung felt higher than the last. When he stepped onto the textured surface of the board, the pool looked miles away. The people below looked small. He edged his way to the tip of the board, his toes curling over the edge. He looked down at the turquoise water swirling below, and for a second, he wanted to climb back down.

"Don't think, just jump!" Sam yelled from below.

Leo took a deep breath, squeezed his eyes shut, and stepped off into nothingness.

For a split second, there was the rushing wind and the feeling of weightlessness. Then, the rush of bubbles and the cool embrace of the water. He kicked hard, surging toward the light breaking through the surface.

When he popped up, the first thing he heard was Sam cheering. "That was awesome! You didn't even belly flop!"

Leo swam to the side, breathless but buzzing with adrenaline. "It was... actually kind of fun."

"Told you," Sam grinned, high-fiving him
