La sua evoluzione è stata legata al Po, il più grande fiume d’Italia, ma anche a una rete di piccoli torrenti (torrente Dora Riparia, torrent Stura di Lanzo, torrent Stura di Demonte, ecc.) che hanno alimentato le sue industrie fin dal XIX secolo.

Durante il boom industriale, questi corsi d’acqua venivano spesso deviati, incanalati e, soprattutto, inquinati. Le acque grezze delle fabbriche di acciaio, di ceramica e di automobile si riversavano nei torrenti, creando una miscela di odori metallici, chimici e di decomposizione organica. È da questo periodo che nasce il mito del “torrente puzzolente” – non tanto per il suo odore permanente, quanto per il ricordo collettivo di un’inquinamento che ha segnato la memoria urbana.

2.1. Una leggenda metropolitana

Nel linguaggio dei giovani torinesi, “torrente puzzolente” è diventato un’espressione gergale per descrivere situazioni di disagio o di “cattivo odore” nella vita quotidiana. Si usa per parlare di un bar che serve cibi poco freschi, di un quartiere dove la pulizia è trascurata, o addirittura di una discussione accesa in cui le parole “puzzano” di rancore. Questa metafora ha radici profonde: il torrente, come la vita urbana, scorre incessante, mescolando acque pulite e torbide.

4.1. Paesaggi e turismo

Il torrente, pur se piccolo, è un elemento di identità paesaggistica. Le escursioni lungo il Torrente San Lorenzo o le passeggiate sul sentiero del Torrente Busa offrono ai torinesi e ai turisti un contatto diretto con la natura, lontano dal traffico cittadino. Questi percorsi sono spesso accompagnati da racconti di “odorose leggende” che rendono il cammino più suggestivo.
