Cordell Burrell, known as Skatta, was already a heavyweight behind rhythms like the Pump Up Riddim and Rice and Peas Riddim. In 2004, he crafted a beat in his Kingston studio that fused East Indian melodic influences (hence the colloquial term “Coolie,” which has since been reclaimed in dancehall culture) with hard-edged dancehall drums.
