The words felt different in Indonesian. Heavier. More ancient. Like listening to a wayang narrator telling a tale from before the sun and moon existed.
He read until 3 AM. He reached the chapter about the making of the Silmarils. He reached the Oath of Fëanor. He reached the first kinslaying. And he wept — not because the translation was bad, but because it was so achingly beautiful. Someone, years ago, alone in some other small rented room in some other rainy city, had loved this story so much that they spent three years carving it into a language Tolkien never imagined.
The next morning, Arga copied the file onto a USB drive. He took it to a print shop near UI. “Jilid dan kasih sampul warna biru tua,” he said. (Bind it and give it a dark blue cover.)
The shopkeeper raised an eyebrow. “Novel, ya? Tebal amat.” (A novel? That’s thick.)
“Bukan novel,” Arga smiled. “Ini sejarah dunia. Versi mini.”
He held the bound printout on the bus ride home. No cover image. No barcode. Just dark blue cardboard and a title he had handwritten in white gel pen: SILMARILLION — Terjemahan Sunyi.
That night, he didn’t search for another download. He didn’t need to. The file — the one he had typed “install” for, as if a story could be installed into a soul — was already running inside him.
And somewhere in the unseen world, the Lonely Wanderer, who had long abandoned their little blog, perhaps felt a faint echo: someone, somewhere, was reading their translation by lamplight, turning pages printed at a shop near a university, whispering the names of Valar in Bahasa Indonesia like old prayers.
The Silmarillion was never truly downloaded. It was inherited. One lonely fan to another. Across time, across formats, across the rain.
