The Ultimate Guide: How to Download Palo Alto Expedition OVA and Install It

In the fast-paced world of network security, migration between firewall platforms is often a nightmare of manual rule conversion, object mapping, and configuration audits. Palo Alto Networks solved this problem with Expedition—a powerful, free tool that helps organizations migrate from legacy firewalls (Cisco, Check Point, Fortinet, etc.) to Palo Alto Networks Next-Generation Firewalls (NGFWs).

But before you can start migrating, you need to get the tool running. The standard deployment method is using the Expedition OVA (Open Virtual Appliance) file. This guide will walk you through every step of the process: downloading the correct OVA, installing it on your hypervisor, and performing the initial setup.

Step 3 – The First Boot

Console output scrolled, then stopped at a login prompt. Alex used the default credentials (expedition/expedition) from the docs. A quick ip addr showed DHCP had failed—so they set a static IP via nmtui. download palo alto expedition ova install

Part 4: How to Install Expedition OVA on VirtualBox (For Lab/Learning)

If you don’t have VMware, VirtualBox is a free alternative.

  1. Download and install Oracle VirtualBox (latest version).
  2. Import the OVA:
    • Open VirtualBox → FileImport Appliance.
    • Click the folder icon → select your .ova file.
    • Click Next.
  3. Appliance Settings:
    • You can tweak RAM/CPU here. Minimum: 4096 MB RAM, 2 CPUs.
    • Ensure “Reinitialize the MAC address of all network cards” is checked (prevents conflicts).
    • Click Import.
  4. Network Settings (Important):
    • Right-click the imported VM → SettingsNetwork.
    • Adapter 1: Enable → Attached to “Bridged Adapter” (so Expedition gets an IP on your LAN).
    • Alternatively, use NAT with port forwarding if you only need local access.
  5. Start the VM and follow the same static IP steps from Part 3.

Step 1: Download the Expedition OVA

  1. Log in to the Palo Alto Networks Customer Support Portal (https://support.paloaltonetworks.com).
  2. Navigate to the Software section in the top menu.
  3. In the "Select a Product" dropdown, search for and select Expedition (sometimes listed under "Migration Tools").
  4. Locate the latest version of the software. You will typically see a download link for the .ova file (e.g., Expedition-1.x.x.ova).
  5. Click the download link. Read and accept the End-User License Agreement (EULA) to start the download.

Note: You must also download the Expedition Enterprise .license file from the "Software" list if you intend to use advanced migration features, though the base tool functions without a license for basic translations.

Phase 2: Initial VM Configuration

  1. Once deployed, go to the Console tab of the Expedition VM.
  2. The VM will boot Ubuntu Linux. Login credentials (default):
    • Username: expedition
    • Password: expedition
  3. After login, you will be prompted to change the password immediately. Do this for security.
  4. Check IP Address: Run ip a or ifconfig. The VM defaults to DHCP. If no IP appears, your network lacks DHCP—proceed to static IP configuration below.
