Download the FortiGate VM
Deploying on VMware vSphere (ESXi)
- Upload: In the vSphere Client, go to your Cluster/Host > Right-click > Deploy OVF Template.
- Select Local File: Choose your downloaded
.OVA file.
- Name: Give it a name (e.g.,
FortiGate-Lab-01).

- Port 1 (Management) -> Your Management VLAN.

Step 4: The "Trial" vs. "Licensed" Difference
When you download the base image, you get a 30-day trial license built-in (limited to 1 vCPU and 1GB RAM for small VM sizes).
- Trial Mode: Full features disabled after 30 days (traffic stops passing).
- Permanent: Requires a
License File (.lic) purchased from a Fortinet reseller.
Prerequisites: What You Need Before You Download
Before you attempt to download the FortiGate VM, ensure you have the following: Download The Fortigate Vm
- A Fortinet Account: You must register for a free account at
support.fortinet.com.
- A Valid License (For Production): While a trial is available, production environments require a paid license (FortiCare) tied to a Support Contract or Asset Registration.
- Virtualization Platform: Decide where you will run it.
- VMware ESXi (OVA format)
- Microsoft Hyper-V (VHDX format)
- KVM / OpenStack (QCOW2 format)
- Xen / Citrix Hypervisor
- Linux Containers (Docker)
- Hardware Resources: Minimum requirements are typically 1 vCPU, 1 GB RAM, and 2 GB storage. However, throughput demands will require scaling up (e.g., 4 vCPU, 8 GB RAM for high performance).
Step 5: Understanding the Files (Post-Download)
When you extract the downloaded zip file, you will see several files. Here is what they mean: Download the FortiGate VM Deploying on VMware vSphere
- .vmdk (Virtual Disk): This is the hard drive of the FortiGate. You will attach this to your VM.
- .ovf / .ova: These are deployment templates (mostly for VMware). Using these makes setup easier as they pre-configure RAM and CPU settings.
- .qcow2: The disk image for KVM/QEMU/EVE-NG.
fortigate.vmdk vs fortigate.dat: Ensure you use the main .vmdk file (usually named fortigate.vmdk or similar) as the boot drive.
Step 5: Initiate the Download
- Click on the hyperlinked filename.
- Read the license agreement prompt if displayed and accept it.
- The download will begin. File sizes typically range from 300 MB to 600 MB.
Common Issues (And Fixes)
- "Download requires subscription": Fortinet locks downloads behind active support contracts. If you just need to study, request a FortiGate VM Trial License from the Fortinet website (they usually email you a link within 24 hours).
- Slow download speed: Fortinet's servers throttle free accounts. Use a download manager if the file times out.
Step 3: Select the Correct Product Family
You will see a long list of Fortinet products. Look for:

Do not select "FortiGate (Hardware)" unless you have physical units.
