Abstract

This paper examines the EastWest Quantum Leap RA virtual instrument library, a seminal collection of world and ethnic instruments released in the mid-2000s. While the library was originally designed for the proprietary Play Engine, the prevalence of "Repack" versions—unofficial conversions for Native Instruments’ Kontakt format—has extended its lifespan well beyond typical software obsolescence. This review analyzes the audio quality, user interface, and articulation depth of RA, while simultaneously addressing the ethical and functional implications of the "Repack" culture that sustains its current usage.

Overview

East West Quantum Leap RA is a legendary world instrument collection that captures the authentic sounds of global music traditions. Originally developed by award-winning producers Doug Rogers and Nick Phoenix, this "Repack" version is optimized for modern Kontakt workflows, providing a streamlined, hard-drive–friendly alternative to the original bulky installation. east west quantum leap ra repack kontakt library

Part 6: Sonic Character – Why RA Still Matters in 2025

Despite being nearly two decades old, the RA library possesses a quality rarely found in modern “world music” libraries: imperfection.

Modern libraries like Ethno World 7 or UVI World Suite are pristine, multi-sampled, and phase-aligned. They sound like instruments played in a vacuum. RA, by contrast, was recorded in large live rooms (EastWest Studio 1) with subtle room bleed, mechanical noises (key clicks, breath sounds), and uneven velocities.

This makes RA perfect for:

Example patch to try: The “Shakuhachi Sustains” – map it to a breath controller or mod wheel. Unlike newer libraries, RA’s version has a natural, slightly airy release that sounds like a real bamboo flute, not a synth pad.

Part 6: For the Purists – Should You Track Down the Repack?

Let’s be honest. If you are a hobbyist producer with no budget, you might still search for the "East West Quantum Leap RA Repack Kontakt Library" on Reddit, AudioZ, or Rutracker.

If you choose that path, here is what to watch for: The Sound of Antiquity: A Technical and Ethical

But we advise against piracy. Why? Because East West periodically releases RA 2.0 updates (included in ComposerCloud) that feature improved scripting, and they have hinted at a future Kontakt version.

4.2 Artistic Limitations

While the sounds are authentic, the playability is dated. Modern libraries (such as those from Impact Soundworks or Embertone) utilize complex scripting to mimic the behavior of real instruments (e.g., realistic legato transitions). RA, even in Repack form, relies on simple key-switching and velocity layers. It requires significant MIDI editing to sound human. Disclaimer : This repack is intended for owners
