Eliza - Samudio
The story of Eliza Samudio is a tragic account of ambition, betrayal, and a failure of protection that sparked a national conversation on femicide in Brazil. The Aspiring Model
Born in 1985 in Foz do Iguaçu, Eliza Samudio dreamed of becoming a professional model. By eighteen, she moved to São Paulo to pursue this goal, but struggled financially and eventually worked as a call girl and actress to support herself. In May 2009, she met Bruno Fernandes de Souza, then the star goalkeeper and captain of the elite football club Flamengo. The Pregnancy and Threats
Eliza became pregnant after their brief encounter. When she told Bruno, he reportedly reacted with violence, demanding she have an abortion. In October 2009, Eliza reported to police that Bruno and his associates had kidnapped her, held her at gunpoint, and forced her to ingest substances to terminate the pregnancy.
Despite her report and a medical test confirming the presence of abortive chemicals, the legal system failed her:
Restraining Order Denied: A judge denied her request for a protective order because she and Bruno did not have a "stable relationship".
Delayed Investigation: The results of her medical test were not processed until after she had already disappeared. The Lure and Disappearance eliza samudio
In February 2010, Eliza gave birth to a son, whom she also named Bruno. She filed a lawsuit for child maintenance, which threatened Bruno’s career as he was being scouted by top European clubs like A.C. Milan.
In June 2010, Eliza was lured from Rio de Janeiro to Bruno’s ranch in Minas Gerais under the false promise that he would recognize the child and provide financial support. She was never seen again.
Background and Relationship
Samudio was a 25-year-old aspiring actress and model in 2010. She gained public attention following a brief romantic involvement with Bruno Fernandes de Souza, then the star goalkeeper and captain of the popular Brazilian football club Flamengo. At the time, Souza was at the peak of his career, celebrated as a sports hero.
Samudio became pregnant and gave birth to their son, Bruninho, in early 2010. Following the birth, she sought to legally prove Souza’s paternity and secure child support. This pursuit of legal recognition and financial aid placed her in direct conflict with the goalkeeper, his then-wife (Dayanne Rodrigues), and his close circle of associates.
The Shocking Climax: A Return to Soccer
The most controversial chapter began in 2019. Bruno, still technically a convicted murderer in the semi-open regime, signed a contract with a small soccer club in Minas Gerais. The story of Eliza Samudio is a tragic
The reaction was immediate and furious. Women’s rights groups (like Instituto Maria da Penha) protested. Sponsors threatened to pull out. Social media exploded with the hashtag #ElizaSamudio. The club, under immense pressure, ultimately rescinded the contract.
But the damage was done. The episode proved that for a certain echelon of Brazilian society—a famous soccer player—even a conviction for murder was not a career-ending event.
In 2023, a judge finally ordered Bruno back to a closed prison after he violated the terms of his semi-release. Yet, in 2024, new petitions for his freedom began circulating again. As of 2025, the legal battle over his release continues, a painful, open wound for the Samudio family.
The Crime and the Cover-Up
According to confessions and subsequent court evidence, what happened on June 4 was a calculated execution.
- The Kidnapping: Bruno, along with his friend Luiz Henrique Romão (known as "Macarrão") and his then-wife Dayanne, picked up Samudio.
- The Murder: In a rented house in the neighborhood of Venda Nova (in Minas Gerais state), Bruno strangled Samudio. Some accounts suggest she was attacked by Bruno and Macarrão simultaneously.
- The Dismemberment: In a crime of grotesque violence, the killers dismembered Eliza Samudio’s body.
- The Disposal: Her remains were fed to Rottweilers owned by Bruno. The remaining bone fragments were allegedly mixed into a concrete slab that was poured at the property.
The goalkeeper did not act alone. He enlisted his former friend, Macarrão, as the primary enforcer, and his wife, Dayanne, to pose as the child’s mother. They registered Samudio’s infant son, Bruninho, under Dayanne’s name, attempting to erase Eliza from existence entirely. The Kidnapping: Bruno, along with his friend Luiz
For eight months, the deception worked. Bruno continued to play professional soccer. He celebrated victories. He gave interviews. Meanwhile, a baby—the living proof of the crime—was being raised by his killer father.
The Arrest and Trial
The dam broke in 2011. Police, acting on the cousin’s tip, found the rented house and discovered traces of blood and the infant’s registration fraud. On July 7, 2011, police arrested Bruno at his luxury apartment in Rio. The nation was stunned. Flamengo immediately terminated his contract.
The trial was a media circus, the likes of which Brazil had not seen since the murder of Daniella Perez in 1992. Bruno, initially arrogant and denying everything, eventually watched as his accomplices made plea deals in exchange for lighter sentences.
- Bruno Fernandes de Souza was convicted of triple homicide (qualified by asphyxiation, concealment of a corpse, and kidnapping). He was sentenced to 22 years and 3 months.
- Luiz Henrique Romão (Macarrão) received a similar sentence.
- Dayanne do Carmo (Bruno’s wife) was acquitted of murder but convicted for fraudulently registering the child.
However, the story does not end there, which is why this case remains a symbol of Brazil’s broken justice system.
