Review of EN 17168: Cultural Heritage — Conservation of Cultural Heritage — Guidelines for the Management, Recording, Conservation and Care of Arms and Armour Collections

Part 2: Why Was EN 17168 Necessary?

Before EN 17168, Europe saw a patchwork of solutions. The UK used "platform edge markings" and tactile paving. Germany employed "Sicherheitstüren" (safety doors) at select S-Bahn stations. France experimented with movable fences.

Emergency Openings

Every 12 meters (or less), there must be a break-out panel or swing gate that: en 17168

 • Opens inward (toward platform) with a force < 150 N.
 • Is clearly marked with green pictograms (ISO 7010).
 • Cannot be opened from the track side.

General Purpose of Standards

Standards like EN 17168 are developed to: Review of EN 17168: Cultural Heritage — Conservation

 • Ensure Safety: By setting minimum safety requirements, these standards help protect users from potential hazards associated with products or services.
 • Promote Efficiency: They can specify performance criteria that encourage innovation and efficiency, helping organizations to improve their products and processes.
 • Facilitate Trade: By providing a common technical language and set of requirements, these standards can simplify the process of trading across borders within the European market.
 • Build Confidence: Compliance with standards can enhance trust among consumers and businesses, as it demonstrates a commitment to quality and safety.

Scope: Which Products Fall Under EN 17168?

To determine if a product must comply with EN 17168, the manufacturer must verify two things: Opens inward (toward platform) with a force < 150 N

 1. It is a laminate floor covering (HDF core with a decorative and overlay layer).
 2. It has a micro-grooved surface. The standard defines a micro-groove as a recessed channel where the depth is significantly less than the width, typically less than 2 mm deep and machined into the surface layer, not just the joint edge.

Products explicitly excluded from EN 17168:

 • Smooth laminate floors (covered by EN 13329).
 • Floor coverings with deep, hand-carved grooves (where depth > 2mm).
 • Vinyl or LVT click floors (covered by EN 16511 or ISO 10582).
 • Embossed surfaces without machined grooves.

If a product claims to be a "micro-beveled" or "micro-scraped" laminate floor, it should ideally be tested against EN 17168.

4. Testing Procedures (Normative Annexes)

 • Static shear test (Annex A): Apply lateral force to friction block – must not break or loosen at ≥1.5× rated braking force.
 • Thermal cycling (Annex B): 10 cycles from 20°C → 350°C → 20°C; check for cracks or gap formation.
 • Vibration test (Annex C): 2 hours at 200 Hz, 5g acceleration – no loosening of fasteners.

C. Conservation Treatments (Interventions)

This is the technical core of the standard.

 • Minimal Intervention: The standard strongly advocates for the "less is more" philosophy. Cleaning a blade
