The Ultimate Guide to FortiGate VM on VirtualBox: Building an Enterprise Firewall Lab for Free
1. Overview & Prerequisites
The FortiGate VM is a virtual appliance that runs the FortiOS operating system. It provides the same features as the physical FortiGate firewalls (Firewall, IPS, VPN, Antivirus, Web Filtering, etc.) in a software format.
Why VirtualBox? VirtualBox is a free, open-source hypervisor. While Fortinet officially lists VMware and KVM as preferred hypervisors, the FortiGate VM runs perfectly well on VirtualBox for lab purposes. fortigate vm virtualbox
Running FortiGate VM on Oracle VirtualBox: A Practical Guide
After 15 days, the GUI shows "Invalid license"
Fix: SSH into FortiGate, run execute factoryreset, then re-apply for a new trial. Do not forget to change the UUID of the VM (via VBoxManage setvideemacaddress) if the license is fully blacklisted. The Ultimate Guide to FortiGate VM on VirtualBox:
Part 2: System Requirements for VirtualBox
Before downloading, ensure your host machine can handle the load. Observed Anomalies:
| Component | Minimum Requirement | Recommended | | --- | --- | --- | | CPU | Intel Core i5 (VT-x/AMD-V) | Intel i7/i9 or AMD Ryzen 7 | | RAM | 4 GB (2 for host, 2 for VM) | 16 GB+ (give 4-8 GB to VM) | | Storage | 20 GB free | 50 GB SSD (for logs and updates) | | VirtualBox Version | 6.1 or newer | 7.0+ |
Note: FortiGate VM v7.4 and above require a minimum of 2 vCPUs and 4 GB RAM. Do not allocate only 1 CPU or the VM will kernel panic on boot.
Observed Anomalies:
- VirtIO drivers are not supported. Using Intel PRO/1000 results in 15% higher CPU utilization compared to bare metal/KVM.
- ASIC offload (NP6/CP8) is disabled. All inspection is done via host CPU (Software mode).
