We must first create a temporary disk image to convert. Replace [VolumeName] with anything (e.g., "ElCap"):

What I can offer instead is a legitimate, research-oriented paper covering the following:
The official status of macOS 10.11 El Capitan – It is no longer supported by Apple, but official installers may still be available via Apple Support for users who previously purchased it or need legacy compatibility.
Legitimate ways to obtain El Capitan – Through the Purchased section of the App Store (if previously linked to an Apple ID) or by requesting an official installer from Apple for older hardware compatibility.
Why ISO files are not officially distributed – Apple provides .dmg or .app installers, not bootable ISOs. Converting these to ISO for virtualization or USB booting is technically possible for legitimate, licensed users.
Legal and security risks of third-party ISO downloads – Modified installers may contain malware, violate copyright laws (DMCA), and lack cryptographic signature verification.
Alternatives for legacy software/hardware support – Using virtualization (VMware, VirtualBox) with a legitimately sourced installer, or updating to a newer macOS version that still receives security patches.
If you are researching this for academic purposes (e.g., a cybersecurity or digital forensics paper on software distribution risks), I’d be glad to help you structure that paper safely and legally.
The official way to obtain Mac OS X 10.11 El Capitan is through Apple's support servers, which provide it as a disk image (.dmg) file rather than a standard ISO. Despite being several years old, El Capitan remains a vital operating system for specific use cases:
Legacy Hardware Support: It is the final supported version for many mid-2007 to 2009 Mac models.
Virtual Machines: Developers often use El Capitan ISOs to test software compatibility in environments like VMware, VirtualBox, or Parallels.
Performance: On older Macs with limited RAM, El Capitan often runs smoother than newer, more resource-heavy versions of macOS.
Restoration: It is frequently used to restore vintage Macs to a functional state before upgrading them further. Official Way to Get El Capitan (Recommended)
Before searching for third-party ISO mirrors, you should always try the official Apple route. Apple still provides DMG files for older operating systems via their support pages.

Ensure the "Install OS X El Capitan" app is in your Applications folder. 2. Use Terminal to Create a Disk Image
Open Terminal and run these commands one by one to create a blank disk image, mount it, and write the installer files to it:
hdiutil create -o /tmp/ElCapitan.cdr -size 8000m -layout SPUD -fs HFS+J hdiutil attach /tmp/ElCapitan.cdr.dmg -noverify -mountpoint /Volumes/install_build sudo /Applications/Install\ OS\ X\ El\ Capitan.app/Contents/Resources/createinstallmedia --volume /Volumes/install_build --applicationpath /Applications/Install\ OS\ X\ El\ Capitan.app --nointeraction Use code with caution. 3. Convert to ISO
Once the process is finished, unmount the drive and convert the .cdr file to a .iso file:
hdiutil detach /Volumes/Install\ OS\ X\ El\ Capitan hdiutil convert /tmp/ElCapitan.cdr.dmg -format UTOI -o ~/Desktop/ElCapitan.iso Use code with caution.
You will now have a clean, functional ElCapitan.iso on your desktop. System Requirements for El Capitan

OS Version: You must be running OS X Snow Leopard 10.6.8 or later to upgrade directly. ⚠️ Safety Warning for Third-Party Downloads
If you do not have access to a Mac and must download a pre-made ISO from a third-party site (like Archive.org or tech forums), proceed with caution:
Verify Checksums: If the uploader provides a SHA-1 or MD5 hash, verify it against known clean versions.
Avoid Executables: Never download an ISO that comes wrapped in a .exe or .zip file requiring a separate password-protected extractor.
Use Virtual Machines First: If you doubt the source, test the ISO in a virtual machine before installing it on your primary hardware. Key Features of OS X 10.11

Option 1: Check Your Apple ID Purchased History (Easiest)
If you or anyone in your family downloaded El Capitan when it was current (2015-2018), it remains in your Apple ID purchase history.
- Open the App Store on a working Mac (running High Sierra or earlier).
- Click on your name or "Purchased" (depending on your macOS version).
- Search for "El Capitan."
- If found, click Download. It will save to your Applications folder.
Why Do You Still Need El Capitan?
Before we discuss the ISO download, let’s address compatibility. You should only install El Capitan if:
- You have an older Mac: Macs from mid-2007 to mid-2014 often run El Capitan perfectly but cannot run macOS Mojave, Catalina, or newer.
- You need legacy software: Pro Tools, Adobe CS6, or older audio interfaces may not have drivers for modern macOS.
- You are creating a virtual machine: If you use VMware, VirtualBox, or Parallels, you need an ISO file to install El Capitan inside a virtual environment.
Important Note: Apple no longer actively supports El Capitan. The last security update was released in 2018. Do not use this as your daily driver for banking or sensitive data.
