The story of the first season of the TV series , titled Blood and Sand
, follows the journey of a Thracian warrior who is betrayed by Rome and forced into the brutal life of a gladiator. The Fall of a Warrior
The tale begins when a Thracian leader (later named Spartacus) forms an alliance with the Roman Legatus Claudius Glaber to defend his village against barbarians. However, Glaber betrays the Thracians, ordering them to assist Roman campaigns elsewhere. When the Thracian rebels to protect his home and his wife, Sura, Glaber enslaves Sura and captures the warrior for execution in the arena. Rising from the Ashes
Against all odds, the Thracian survives his execution match, winning the favor of the Roman crowd. Seeing his potential, Quintus Lentulus Batiatus, the owner of a gladiator school (ludus) in Capua, purchases him. The turning point comes when Batiatus finally "finds" Sura, but she is delivered to Spartacus mortally wounded, dying in his arms. Spartacus later discovers that Batiatus orchestrated her murder to keep him motivated and bound to the ludus.
Fuelled by this ultimate betrayal, Spartacus unites with his rival Crixus and the other gladiators. The season concludes with a violent and spectacular revolt at the House of Batiatus, where the slaves rise up, kill their masters, and escape into the countryside to begin a war against the Roman Republic.
