The Premise

The story follows a lonely, hyperactive, and unnamed pet chameleon (voiced by Johnny Depp). He lives in a terrarium, where he fancies himself a master thespian, putting on plays with his only friends: a dead cockroach, a plastic toy fish, and a headless Barbie doll. However, his life is one of isolation; he has no identity and doesn't know who he really is.

The Spirit of the West

Lost and broken, Rango encounters the "Spirit of the West"—a spectral figure appearing as "The Man with No Name" (Clint Eastwood). The Spirit tells Rango that it doesn't matter who he used to be; what matters is who he chooses to be now. Rango realizes he must return to save the town. The Mystery of the Water

As Sheriff, Rango investigates the water shortage. He discovers that the water supply is being manipulated. During a bank robbery investigation, he finds that the vault has been emptied, not by thieves, but simply because the water was gone. Playback compatibility

Rango and his deputies track the "bank robbers" (a family of moles) to an underground mine. There, they discover that the water has been diverted via pipes. The Mayor is damming the water to force the townspeople out so he can sell the land to developers looking to build a modern city (a metaphor for the destruction of the West and the rise of Las Vegas).
