In September 2024, GOG.com surprised the community by releasing Resident Evil 3 (alongside RE1 and RE2) as part of their “Classic” initiative. The GOG version promised:
- Out-of-the-box Windows 10/11 compatibility.
- DirectX 9 rendering (improved graphics).
- Restored, high-quality original audio (not MIDI).
- Optional smooth filtering and integer scaling.
- Achievements and cloud saves.
For the average player, the GOG version is perfectly fine. It runs, it saves, and Nemesis will still crash through a window to ruin your day. But for the hardcore retro enthusiast, the GOG release still has shortcomings: a limited internal resolution, no true widescreen (just stretched 4:3), and minor audio desync issues in cutscenes.
