Kekilli’s entry into the entertainment industry was unconventional. Before acting, she worked in administrative jobs. Her film debut was in the controversial German film "Gegen die Wand" (Head-On) (2004), directed by Fatih Akın.

Following this success, she starred in "Kebab Connection" (2004) and "Eve Dönüş" (The Return of the Prodigal Son) (2006), a Turkish film that earned her the Best Actress award at the Ankara International Film Festival. She won her second Lola for Best Leading Actress for the tragic romance "Die Fremde" (When We Leave) (2010), playing a woman fleeing an honor killing.
