The "Silent Shooting" Trap
You can turn on Silent Shooting (Menu → Camera 1 → Shutter Type → Electronic). It's great for concerts and sleeping babies.
However: Under fluorescent lights or LED screens, you will get banding (dark lines across the image). If you see banding, turn it back to Mechanical. Sony A6400 — Concise Guide & Buyer's Report

Sample Shooting Scenarios
For Photography

- Face/Eye AF: ON (Human + Animal)
- File Format: RAW + JPEG (fine)

Part 9: Recommended Complete Rig Build ($1000 Budget)
If you just bought the a6400 body, here is the ultimate starter kit: Set AF mode to AF-C (Continuous)
- Camera: Sony a6400 (Body only) – $898
- Lens: Sigma 30mm f/1.4 – $289 (Used)
- Audio (Video): DJI Mic (Wireless) or Rode VideoMicro – $159
- Batteries: SmallRig NP-FW50 3-pack + Charger – $45
- Bag: Think Tank Mirrorless Mover 10 – $39
- Tripod: Ulanzi MT-16 (Small tabletop + extension legs) – $30
The Best Video Settings:
- Format: File Format → XAVC S 4K.
- Record Setting: 24p 100M (for cinematic look) or 30p 100M (for vlogging).
- Auto Power OFF Temp. (Crucial): By default, the camera overheats after 20 minutes of 4K. Fix this: Menu → Setup → Auto Power OFF Temp. → High. It will now record until the battery dies.
- Picture Profile: You have two paths.
- Lazy/Great:
PP10 (HLG2). This gives you HDR video. It looks flat but retains highlights. No grading needed beyond a basic SDR conversion.
- Pro:
PP8 (S-Log3). Requires heavy color grading. Warning: The a6400 has 8-bit color, not 10-bit. S-Log3 can get banding in the sky. Use S-Log2 (PP7) instead for 8-bit safety.
Scenario C: Low Light / Night (Manual Mode - M)
- Goal: Let in as much light as possible without introducing "noise" (grain).
- Aperture: Lowest f-number.
- Shutter Speed: Slow (e.g., 1/30s or slower), but use a tripod!
- ISO: Keep it under 3200. If you go above 3200, the image will get grainy.
