Plot Summary: A Love Story in the Shadow of Colonialism
The film opens in 1898 in the Dutch East Indies (modern-day Indonesia). We are introduced to Minke (Iqbaal Ramadhan), a brilliant Javanese nobleman and the only native student at the prestigious HBS (Europeesche Lagere School) in Surabaya. Berikut adalah draft cerita (story draft) yang disusun
Minke is a man caught between two worlds. He writes for a Dutch newspaper, wears Western suits, and speaks fluent Dutch, yet he is still treated as a "Native" (Inlander) by the colonizers. His life changes forever when he meets Annellis (Mawar Eva de Jongh), a beautiful and mysterious Indo (Eurasian) girl. JUDUL PROYEK: BUMI MANUSIA FORMAT: Naskah Cerita Film
Annellis is the daughter of Herman Mellema (Jeroen Lezer), a corrupt Dutch banker, and Nyai Ontosoroh (Shawn Inosanto), a Javanese concubine. In colonial society, a Nyai is a mistress—owned, disrespected, and legally invisible. However, Nyai Ontosoroh is not a victim. She is a fierce, educated businesswoman who turned her humiliation into power, running the Mellema shipping conglomerate.
Minke and Annellis fall in love. Their relationship defies racial and social hierarchies. But tragedy strikes when Herman Mellema is murdered. The Dutch colonial court refuses to see the truth. They railroad Nyai Ontosoroh and Annellis, trying to strip them of their wealth and freedom to teach the "natives" a lesson. The film asks a brutal question: Can love survive when the law views you as sub-human?

Viewing Tips
- Watch with subtitles if you don’t understand Indonesian to catch nuance.
- If interested in fuller context, read Pramoedya’s novel or summaries afterward — the book expands on political and social background.
- Note historical terms and colonial institutions; a quick primer on Dutch colonial administration in the East Indies enhances understanding.
7. Should You Watch It?
- Watch if you: Enjoy beautiful period dramas, tragic romances (like The English Patient or Gone with the Wind), and want to understand colonial Indonesian history.
- Skip if you: Prefer fast-paced action or dislike tragic endings. Also, if you have read and loved the book, you might be disappointed by the simplified plot.
5. Critical Reception & Controversies
- Positive: Praised for its high production value, costumes, cinematography, and Sha Ine Febriyanti’s powerful performance as Nyai Ontosoroh. It introduced classic Indonesian literature to a younger generation.
- Negative/Criticism: Many book readers and critics felt the film oversimplified the novel’s deep political critique. It focused more on the romance (Minke & Annelies) rather than the sharp anti-colonial arguments from the book. Some scenes were criticized as too sentimental.
