Back in the early 2000s, you could swap an airbag control module or program a new key using only a third-party scan tool (like VCDS) and a little know-how. However, as vehicle theft became more sophisticated and emissions scandals rocked the industry, Volkswagen Group locked down its electronic architecture. The Geko server was introduced to ensure that only authorized personnel with verified identities could perform critical vehicle functions.
VW Geko Access refers to the permission granted to a user (or a piece of diagnostic hardware) to query this server. Once access is granted, the server issues a security token that allows the diagnostic tool to perform "Secured Onboard Communication" (also known as SiL or S-online).
This is for VW, Audi, or Skoda franchised dealerships. The dealership pays a substantial annual licensing fee to VW AG. They are issued a specific Dealer Number and User ID. A master technician uses a cryptographic USB dongle (similar to a bank token) to generate a one-time password. This grants instant, full VW Geko Access.
