Blog Post: Where to Find & How to Safely Download Firmware for Huawei HG8145V5 / V2
Disclaimer: Huawei does not publicly distribute firmware to end users. This guide is for educational purposes. Proceed at your own risk; incorrect firmware can brick your ONT.
If you own an HG8145V5 (or its regional variant, the V2), you know it’s a workhorse GPON ONT. But finding official firmware is like hunting a ghost. Here is the reality and the roadmap.
📋 Firmware Information You Need
To identify correct firmware, check your current version:
Login → Status → Device Information
Look for:
- Software Version (e.g., V500R019C00SPC108)
- Hardware Version
- Customization (e.g., TELMEX_CLARO)
Method 2: TFTP Recovery (For Bricked or Stuck Devices)
If your ONT won’t boot:
- Set your PC’s IP to
192.168.100.2, netmask255.255.255.0. - Run a TFTP server on your PC (e.g., SolarWinds TFTP, tftpd32).
- Place the firmware file in the TFTP root directory, renamed to
HG8145V5-V2.bin. - Power cycle the ONT while pressing the reset button for 10 seconds. It will pull the file via TFTP.
Official Huawei Website
The most secure and recommended source for downloading firmware is the official Huawei website. However, navigating to the correct section can be tricky without a direct link. Here's a general approach:
- Visit the Huawei Support Website: Go to https://support.huawei.com or a Huawei support page specific to your region.
- Search for Your Device: Use the search bar to look for "HG8145V5-V2".
- Find the Firmware Section: Look for a section related to "Software" or "Firmware" updates.
- Download and Verify: Download the firmware version compatible with your device. Always verify the integrity of the downloaded file if possible (e.g., through checksums).
Lost custom ISP settings (VLAN, VoIP)
- Cause: The update wiped your TR-069 profiles.
- Fix: Your ISP will reprovision automatically within 24 hours. If not, call them with your ONT serial number and request a “firmware resync.”
1. Understanding Firmware Versions
The HG8145V5 is a GPON terminal used by ISPs worldwide (e.g., PLDT, MTN, Airtel, Movistar). Because ISPs customize the software, there is no single "universal" firmware for this device.
- ISP Custom Firmware: Most units run software branded by the ISP (e.g., "PLDT Home Fibr" or "Airtel Xstream"). These are locked to that specific provider.
- Generic/Stock Huawei Firmware: This is the base software from Huawei. While it unlocks all features, it may not work with your ISP’s specific network authentication settings.
How to Find Your Current Firmware Version
To determine if an update is needed, log into your router’s web interface:
- Open a browser and go to
192.168.100.1or192.168.1.1(check your ISP’s documentation). - Username:
rootoradmin/ Password:adminor your TR069 password (often on the sticker). - Navigate to System Tools > Firmware Upgrade or Device Information.
- Note the Software Version (e.g.,
V500R019C20S135orV500R020C00S100).
A version string like R019 indicates an older 2019 release; R020 or R021 are newer. If your version ends with S135, you are several patches behind.
