Review: IELTS General Training Practice Tests (Computer-Based)

Reading (General Training specific)

This is where many practice tests fail. The real GT Reading has:

  • Section 1: 2–3 short texts (notices, ads, timetables – "social survival").
  • Section 2: 2 texts related to work (job descriptions, contracts, staff handbooks – "workplace survival").
  • Section 3: 1 long, more complex prose (general interest – "general reading").

What good practice tests do: Use authentic materials (e.g., council notices, employee manuals, newspaper extracts).
What bad ones do: Use science/academic texts (those belong to Academic IELTS). Always check that your test source distinguishes GT Reading from Academic. ielts practice test general computer based

How to Practice Computer-Based Listening

When you take an online practice test, pay attention to the following: Section 1: 2–3 short texts (notices, ads, timetables

  1. Navigating the screen: The questions appear at the bottom, and the audio plays via headphones. You must type answers directly into the gaps while listening.
  2. Tab navigation: You cannot "flip" pages like paper. You must scroll.
  3. Highlighting keywords: Practice using your mouse to highlight key phrases before the audio starts.

Overview

The computer-based IELTS General Training test assesses English for work, training or social purposes, using Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking modules. The computer-delivered format is identical in content and scoring to the paper-based test; only the delivery method differs. Total test time: 2 hours 45 minutes (plus optional breaks where permitted). What good practice tests do: Use authentic materials (e

For Listening and Reading

Look at the Review Screen. Most computer-based platforms show you:

  • Time spent per question. If you spent 4 minutes on one Reading question, you have a pacing problem.
  • Question type breakdown. Are you failing on "Matching" or "Multiple Choice"? Focus your next practice session there.

Reading Module

The Reading module consists of three sections with 40 questions. The test lasts for 60 minutes.

  • Section 1: Two or three short texts or several shorter ones (e.g., advertisements, timetables, or instructions).
  • Section 2: Two texts related to the workplace (e.g., company policies, staff handbooks).
  • Section 3: One longer text with a more complex language (e.g., a newspaper article or a chapter from a book).

Section 2: General Training Reading – Time Management is Key

The General Training Reading section is notoriously tricky because it mixes small advertisements (Section 1) with long prose (Section 3). On a computer, you cannot underline sentences physically. You must use the digital highlight function.

Week 1: Orientation

  • Take one untimed computer-based practice test. Just get comfortable with scrolling, clicking, and the timer.
  • Goal: Understand the interface. Don't worry about the score.
